Have the Terrorists Won?

Those sifting through the news of the past few weeks, when stories about the surveillance of Americans and journalists and trials for leaks were in heavy rotation, might be forgiven for wondering if the terrorists have won. This is not said in jest or facetiously; it was always one of the stated goals of Osama bin Laden to turn American life on its head, and it is clear that he and his followers have succeeded in doing just that.

Geoff Dyer and Anna Fifield had an excellent summation of the many behaviors which lend support to the idea that the enemies of America have been successful, at least by some measures, published in the FT over the weekend. Those who can get behind the firewall can find their well-written piece here.
